Sherri Stockman asked:

There are lots of mineral water benefits - retailers of reverse osmosis type filtration units know this. They also know their design indiscriminately removes all minerals from any water filtered.

To counter one of the many inherent flaws in their filtration concept, some companies are adding another step to their designs. They are then referring to their units as mineral revitalization water purification systems.

What they are doing is artificially adding minerals after their primary filters remove them, leaving water with basically the same mineral content as before filtration. While any mineral water benefits are better than no mineral water benefits, these companies are asking you to pay big bucks for something you already have.

Mineral water benefits range from reducing swelling of joints and muscles, increased immune system function, and treatment of certain chronic diseases. Removing minerals and electrolytes from your water is just not a good idea.

Reverse osmosis retailers know this, but until recently based their careers on keeping us ignorant of the fact the design must remove minerals and electrolytes from water. To gloss over these facts, they’re rebranding their products as mineral revitalization water purification systems.

The problem with all mineral revitalization water purification systems is the “re.”

The “re” means the core design of the filter was developed to remove anything heavier than water. The main purpose is desalination, or turning ocean water into drinking water.

Since electrolytes and minerals are also heavier than water, this means they must be removed as well. It is not the filter’s fault, but you would be paying these companies to remove mineral water benefits and then add them back later.

Home reverse osmosis manufacturers and retailers are hoping you won’t know your tap water already has a sufficient amount of naturally occurring minerals.

They’re hoping you think the only other way to gain mineral water benefits is to buy mineral water by the bottle. They’re trying to sell you on the idea that their mineral revitalization water purification systems will give you something you wouldn’t otherwise have.

The problem is, adding another step to the reverse osmosis design isn’t solving any of the design’s issues, it is simply covering them up with a few big and official sounding words.

Rather than throw money away on mineral revitalization water purification systems, designs that have become so obsessed with correcting their flaws, and are large, expensive, redundant space-hoggers, you could just avoid them altogether and purchase an activated carbon filtration unit.

Despite all the new (and old) technology on the market, activated carbon technology is still the most effective. The design efficiently scrubs away any harmful contaminates without stealing any mineral water benefits.

Not to mention any unit that claims to be able to do anything beyond desalination will also have an activated carbon component. Meaning any product referring to itself as mineral revitalization water purification systems will not only waste time and space reintroducing the minerals and electrolytes they remove, their core design is also completely dependent upon a third system to function at all.

Ellis Wilkinson Mineral Water Manufacturer, founded in 1852, at South Meadow Street, Preston.

The mineral-water trade was once a thriving industry in Preston, the largest manufacturer of which was Ellis Wilkinson, who first began making mineral waters at the same time that Matthew Brown was making his home-brewed ale at his small Pole Street, Preston, Brewery. Ellis and Mathew where friends who began making drinks together.

In addition to supplying local shops, Wilkinson’s also agreed to supply Mathew Brown’s growing number of pubs with minerals and also facilitated the production of drinks for Vimto in their early days of trading.

Ellis Wilkinson’s first wife died in childbirth. His second wife was a strict Quaker from the USA and she played a prominent part in running the mineral water business.

Banking services in those days were limited and one of her tasks was to collect the roundsmen’s cash. She stored the gold soveriegns in a bucket beneath the bed of their home, Ribbleton House, which stood in its own grounds near Gamull Lane.

Mixing the mineral water fruit essences in the early days was a skilled job but later they installed a carbonating and bottling plant. In 1928 the firm became a limited company with Wilkinson’s four sons as the directors. Wilkinson’s had an extensive range of drinks on their portfolio which were popular throughout the North West.

In addition to manufacturing pop, Wilkinson’s were also chocolate and sweet wholesalers, which were made on site. Wilkinsons’s also supplied Tea and Wine. At the peak of their trade employed about 40 people.

In 1967 Ellis Wilkinson’s merged with T. and R. Smith’s soft drinks of Chorley who had already been taken over by Garfield Weston.

Other former local mineral firms who were already part of this group were Clayton’s of Chorley, Medico of Blackburn, St Annes Mineral Waters and Turner’s of Chorley.

In 1969 change was still in the air and T. and R. Smith’s was taken over by J. N. Nichols (Vimto) of Manchester.

Director and general manager of the Chorley concern since 1967 was Ronald Wilkinson who was the Grandson of Ellis Wilkinson the founder of the former Preston mineral water business.

Hard Water Expert asked:

Following on from the previous article on water softeners, below is a explanation on the types of water softeners that can be used to minimize the effects of hard water around the home…including the pros and cons of each and the potential health issues that arise.

Chemical Water Softeners

This is when specific chemicals are added to the water to control water hardness.

The types of chemical that can be used include washing soda and borax. These chemicals form an insoluble precipitate with calcium and magnesium minerals in the water. The mineral ions then cannot interfere with cleaning efficiency, but the precipitate makes the water cloudy and can build up on surfaces. The disadvantage of precipitating water softeners is that they can increase the alkalinity of the water and this may damage skin and other materials being cleaned.

The second type is non-precipitating water softeners use phosphates to collect calcium and magnesium ions. There is no precipitate that is formed and alkalinity is not increased. If used in enough quantity, non-precipitating water softeners will help dissolve soap scum for a period of time.

Mechanical Water Softeners

These are devices that can be permanently installed into the plumbing system to continuously remove calcium and magnesium.

They operate on the ion exchange process in which water passes through a media bed, usually with resin beads that are supersaturated with sodium. The ion exchange process takes place as hard water passes through the softening material. The hardness minerals are collected by the beads while at the same time the sodium on the resin beads is released into the water.

When the beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium, they must be re-newed. The recharging is done by passing a salt solution through the beads. The salt solution which contains sodium replaces the calcium and magnesium minerals in the water which are flushed away.

As explained above, hard water treated with an ion exchange water softener has sodium added. The ion exchange softening process adds sodium at the rate of about 8 mg/liter for each grain of hardness removed per gallon of water. For example, if the water has a hardness of 10 grains per gallon, it will contain about 80 mg/liter of sodium after being softened in an ion exchange water softener if all hardness minerals are removed.

The addition of sodium to the water in these cases is potentially an issue to people with raised blood pressure and some individuals may be advised by their doctor not to install water softeners which use this method. In this case it may be advisable to soften just the hot water, or maybe to bypass the water softener with a cold water pipe to provide unsoftened water that can be used for drinking and cooking.

Next in this series of articles we will discuss the pros and cons of water filters and then magnetic water conditioners with regard to controlling hard water and limescale in our homes. Finally, I will layout a complete overview of water treatment methods discussed so far and explain the approximate cost of each method from installation to electricity running costs.

Warm Regards,

Patrick Henry

Laurel Tevolitz asked:

Many people wonder is mineral water healthy. We have seen questions about a highly advertised product, natural mineral water H20. We hope to address some of these questions here.

Natural mineral water H20 is described as natures very own sports drink. In ancient times prominent tribal elders often looked to the springs for cures to several medical ailments. It’s a well known fact that the human body is nearly ninety percent water. The earth is two thirds water, as far as we know, life itself is impossible without it. At least, life as we know it.

But, is mineral water healthy? We know that H20 is an absolute necessity, but what about natural mineral water H20? I have a more sincere question, what genius decided it was necessary to improve water?

Americans definitely aren’t living very healthy in a time when obesity is considered an epidemic. Of course, if over eating is to be blamed for fifty percent of the problem, then quick fixes and the “easy road” can be blamed for the other fifty.

What could be easier then spending a couple bucks on the latest health fad that requires you to do nothing but suck natural mineral water H20 out of a bottle labeled something like flab-be-gone made by Tom, Dick, or Harry. The truth is the health industry has become just as, if not more lucrative than, information technology.

People wait for a computer to break, before they get someone to come and fix it. But, all people need is to be told that something is wrong with themselves and they are ready to run right out and get that quick solution. Natural mineral water H20 is just the latest quick fix.

It comes in neat package. The bottle is pretty. It may make you feel good to look at it, but the “mineral water healthy” advertising campaign make some of us rather depressed and concerned.

What makes mineral water healthy is supposed to be its nutritional value. What they don’t tell you is that too many minerals are bad, that’s right “bad” for your health.

The people at natural mineral water H20 might suggest that you should never drink anything else. It really depends on how much is in there. An over abundance of calcium can cause nausea, vomiting, or even disposition to your kidneys and lungs.

Similarly, too much zinc can cause abdominal pain and an over abundance of iodine can induce a coma. It is a known fact that iron is the nation’s leading cause of poisoning fatalities in children under the age of six. Maybe, this is the right question to ask; Is mineral water healthy for your kids.

We all need trace quantities of minerals everyday. But, natural mineral water H20 is an overpriced “improvement”. You can get something just as healthy with a water purifier that balances mineral content.

The real answer to is mineral water healthy is simple. No healthier than what comes out of a good water purifying system.
