Peter Foremski asked:
We have all done it, as we shop for our everyday items we instinctively pick up a bottle of natural mineral water or h20 to those who remember its chemical formula from our schooldays.
I have to say that I too fell into that same category of person who believed that if anyone had asked is mineral water healthy? would have answered undoubtedly yes.
As with most topics under discussion there are two sides to any argument and this article will look at some of the often overlooked facts. For example while we may enjoy a nice glass of fresh, pure bottled water have you ever considered that you might be adding to the growing mountain of plastic waste once you have discarded the bottle.
True, much of this material is recycled but a fair amount still ends up in landfill sites too.
Also natural mineral water h20 is sourced not just from local sources, but I have often
seen bottled water for sale from such far away places like Italy. How much does that use up in energy resources in getting it onto our shelves? Remember it’s a heavy product to transport.
Add to this the fact that the industry is largely self regulated and not prone to such stringent scrutiny and testing as the municipal water suppliers. Interestingly I came across a recent study that performed blind tastings amongst members of the public, who were told to taste and rate both bottled and tap water.
No one knew which one was which but, surprisingly the tap variety won the most accolades.
We are of course all free to do as we wish and no one is advocating banning the purchasing of bottled water, just a re-evaluation of how we do things.
After weighing it all up and doing some of my own research I managed to find some great alternative methods of ensuring my supply is of the same quality as anything out of a bottle.

Larry L. Taylor asked:
What are the effects of mineral water on your health? I’m going to tell you a little about mineral water and what some say about it. This will help you make the choice of what kind of water you should be drinking. Mineral water, tap or filtered?
Mineral Water Thoughts
Mineral water, a wonder of the natural world sought after by the ancients for its propensity to cure. Generation after generation has attested to its rejuvenating qualities.
But this is the modern era you say. What’s the real story behind these old voodoo claims? Is mineral water healthy or not? There are one hundred and one different companies, like natural mineral water H2O. Each claims to have the best of something that all of us have access to.
Like me I’m sure you know that all matter is made up of the unseen atom. A powerful little thing that hums with an electrical energy that constantly vibrates and binds to other atoms in special combinations. These combinations can be seen in the form of a solid, liquid or a gas. That means that these little energized atoms can bind to create a tree, a rock, a star, a galaxy and yes, even minerals!
Is it all of these vibrating atoms that make mineral water healthy? Well, if you listen to the advocates for natural mineral water H2O, they will say something like this. These are special crystal like solids, substances that only the earth herself can form, from her very special energy. And, as with all of the energies that surround us daily on this planet we inhabit, they affect us in a very special way.
The essence of our relationship to the earth and how it affects us is what supposedly makes natural mineral water H2O, so very healthy. That’s not a quote from the company, of course, I’m paraphrasing. What made mineral water healthy to the ancients was probably simply a matter of nutritional deficiencies or simple dehydration.
Mineral Water Importance
Some minerals are very important to human health, calcium, magnesium and selenium, just to name a few. So, are these nutrients present in natural mineral water H2O? Is that what makes their mineral water healthy? Not to nearly the extent that you would meet your daily needs.
You might want to compare natural mineral water H2O to what you would otherwise be drinking, though. Some bottled water is purified through a process called distillation, which removes all naturally occurring minerals. Studies have shown that drinking distilled water is bad for the digestive system and can lead to mineral deficiencies. On the long term, that could lead to osteoporosis, erratic heart beat and many other serious health conditions. Sodas and other soft drinks have no nutritional value. Milk has a lot of calcium and other nutrients, but doesn’t travel well.
Water and Vitamins
Water, in and of itself, has no measurable vitamin content, but it is the most hydrating substance known to man. Symptoms of dehydration include erratic heart beat, stomach problems, headache, dizziness, swelling in the extremities and in a very short period of time, it will lead to death. Water is more important to our survival than food. It is just a question of whether expensive brands like natural mineral water H2O are any better than what you could get from your tap.
Water Purifier Choice
If you use a good filtration system, you can get the healthiest drink that there is, with properly balanced mineral content and pH, but without carbonation, which can cause excessive burping and gas. So, the real answer to “is mineral water healthy” is this; no healthier than what you could bottle at home if you have the right purifier on your tap. Laurel Tevolitz asked:
There are supposed to be a number of mineral water benefits, in relation to your health, but the truth of these claims is questionable. Advertisements concerning the glories of mineral revitalization water purification systems are particularly questionable. Let’s find out why.
Mineral water benefits for drinking purposes are derived from the content of things like calcium and potassium. But, if you check with a supplement manufacturer, you will learn that vitamins and minerals dissolved in a liquid are absorbed to early, never make it to the large intestine, so their benefit is minimal, at best.
Mineral revitalization water purification systems are supposedly better for drinking purposes because they take out whatever content is naturally present and replace it with something “better”. It depends on the system, but the ones that use rare Japanese rocks are an unnecessary expense. There is no scientific evidence to indicate that they are effective, at all.
One of the bottled mineral water benefits is balancing electrolytes. You can achieve the same thing by using a quality filtration unit and added a teaspoon of sea salt to every gallon. Bottled mineral water benefits may be better than Gatorade, because of the sugar content, artificial colorings and flavorings, but still bottling at home and carrying it with you is the best choice.
The makers of mineral revitalization water purification systems claim that they imbue antibacterial and antifungal properties. Once again, there is no science behind these claims.
In years past, health spas were often located around hot springs, but it is more likely that it was the relaxation that could be achieved in those spots, rather than any other medicinal value. If you go even further back in time, those spots were the only places where a person could get a hot bath. Just cleaning sores, war wounds and other injuries is a good health practice. But, we can accomplish it today without the use of expensive mineral revitalization water purification systems.
Bottled mineral water benefits are supposed to include the treatment of chronic conditions and diseases. But the only lists you will find are those on the websites of companies that sell the bottles. Even Perrier does not list any purported health giving qualities of their beverages. They merely suggest them as an alternative to sodas or alcoholic drinks. Perhaps that is one of the mineral water benefits, staying sober is healthier.
The problem is that you can never be sure of the quality of anything that comes in a bottle. The entire supply of Perrier had to be recalled a few years back because of benzene contamination. It took an independent laboratory to discover the content and he was merely curious.
There are some mineral revitalization water purification systems that are reasonably priced because the technology that they use is called ion exchange. It’s more advanced, but costs less to produce. If you buy direct from the manufacturer, you can save even more. It does feel good to shower in something like natural spring-water and it is definitely better for your skin than showering in chlorine.
For drinking purposes, a mineral-content similar to what you would find in a spring tastes best. So, what mineral water benefits that there truly are can be obtained from your own tap, if you have the right purification system.

Charles Harper asked:
Our bodies are composed mainly from water, 70% that is. The rest of it is composed mainly by minerals. Therefore, it is sure to say that water is essential to life. However, we have to say that not just water, but natural mineral water H2O.
Now, the question that comes into one’s mind is: why is mineral water healthy, and not just the simple tap water? The answer is simple–besides refreshing that huge amount of water that composes your body, you supplement it with the necessary minerals. Minerals are ingested each day by us, humans, and not only. For example, it is well know that carrots contain a precious amount of iron; likewise, pees contain magnesium and so on. And we are not even beginning to discus about the daily multi-vitamin supplements.
Therefore, natural mineral water H2O it is very good for your organism. It contains magnesium, small amounts of iron, zinc, potassium, sodium, calcium. Even if you might believe that it can be of no good for your body to be exposed to such a great amount of minerals, natural mineral water H2O is highly recommendable, and not only by those that sell it on the market.
When trying to answer to the question as to whether mineral water is healthy, we are not trying to sell you a product, but trying to help you make a good decision. Most medical doctors recommend that natural mineral water H2O should be consumed on a daily basis. The iron helps your blood circulation, the magnesium is a stress relieving element, the calcium can prevent bone diseases, and so on.
Also, it is well known that medical doctors do not recommend just the ingestion of such type of water, but even having long, relaxing baths in it. It is even more recommendable if you are suffering from illnesses such as rheumatism or arthritis.
Natural mineral water H2O is very good in the fight against such illnesses. For example, in arthritis, joints get swollen and become painful. When having daily baths and showers with water with a higher concentration of minerals, the joints become normal in size, while the pain decreases in intensity.
However, the concentration of minerals should not be very high. And you might also want to know what minerals are contained by the liquid. For example, high concentrations of sodium can cause the rising of the blood pressure. Or, regarding the ingredients of mineral water, you have to know that not all minerals are benefic to the human organism (for example, led infestation is the most common cause of cancer).
To conclude, we must say that the answer of whether or not mineral water is healthy? We can only be positive. Water in itself has curative properties. When combined with the force of the minerals, its use is highly recommendable.
However, you should always pay attention to the concentration of the minerals contained by the mineral water (as we have said, higher concentrations can prove to be bad for the organism). Also, you should take a good look at the minerals contained by that liquid.

Hard Water Expert asked:
When considering which water softener to purchase there are some important factors to consider including some significant health issues. This is because water softeners actually use sodium to alter the water. As we all know, sodium is a major cause of increased blood pressure and other serious health problems.
Sodium is an essential mineral because it’s necessary for fluid and electrolyte balance in your body. However, consuming too much salt (also known as sodium chloride) may lead to high blood pressure, a condition called hypertension.
How Do Water Softeners Work:
Water softeners or whole house water treatment systems use a process called ion exchange to remove minerals from a water supply before it enters the home. This involves passing the water through a tank filled with resin beads that are coated with ions of either sodium or potassium chloride.
In simple terms, the sodium or potassium ions in the water softener swap places with the calcium or magnesium ions (which are the hard minerals that cause hard water stains and limescale) in a domestic water supply.
What To Consider Before Purchase:
• Firstly, sodium chloride is usually less expensive than potassium chloride although the latter is better for the environment. This is because the system has to have the brine solution discharged to recharge the ions on the resin beads.
• If the potassium solution is discharged it has less impact on the environment and can actually be put on lawns as potassium is a key plant nutrient!
• Contrary to a common misconception, using sodium salt in your water softener will not adversely affect your plumbing. Most modern plumbing is made of PVC plastic and is not affected by increased levels of either sodium or potassium chloride. Sodium salt can, however, reduce the amount of maintenance required for your brine tank.
• For those concerned about the health issues of how much sodium is put into the water by a water softener, the answer is, it all depends. The harder your water supply the more sodium ions are needed to soften it. That said, studies indicate that even water softened with sodium chloride has a low concentration of sodium.
• The costs of water softeners are usually far outweighed by the benefits and cost savings obtained, through using softened water.
Your local health department can tell you the sodium and other mineral content of your community’s water supply.
Options if Your Tap Water is High in Sodium:
• Consider switching to another type of water-purification system.
• Buy demineralized water for drinking and cooking.
• Softening only the hot water and using unsoftened cold water for drinking and cooking.
Ultimately the choice between sodium or potassium salts in your water softener is a personal one, depending on the presence of potential health issues with your water supply, cost, and environmental priorities.
Whichever one you decide on, the advantages of a water softener far outweigh the disadvantages. As well as all the above they can also be helpful in reducing cleaning time by preventing hard water stains and limescale forming around the home.

Robert asked:
Natural mineral water benefits your body like no other liquid in this world. As you probably know, naturally occurring water has lots of essential minerals which are very important for your good health. Unfortunately, a lot of water purifiers these days destroy these essential minerals present in water. As a result, the water you get is just too pure to drink. It is de-mineralized and as clean as the distilled water they use in labs.
First you need to understand in what ways does drinking natural mineral water benefits your body. To put it simply, drinking pure mineral water could be the best thing that can happen to your body. More than 70% of the human body is made of water. We need water to function and the water we drink needs to be pure for us to be able to stay away from waterborne diseases.
Since a lot of people have slowly begun to realize the importance of pure mineral water, a lot of companies have started selling mineral revitalization water purification systems to exploit this awareness among people. These mineral revitalization systems work in a strange way. Let me explain.
Mineral revitalization water purification systems usually have two units inside them – a water purification unit and a mineral revitalization unit. Now, you may have a question – ‘if water already has minerals, why do these systems have a mineral revitalization unit?’ That’s a great question. Let me answer that.
Mineral revitalization water purification systems, as the name suggests, re-mineralize water after it gets purified. The reason is simple. Usually, such systems have a reverse osmosis unit or a distillation unit for purifying purposes. Since these methods destroy the essential minerals present in water, it becomes necessary to re-mineralize it. That’s what the second unit does. The purified water goes into the second unit and comes out re-mineralized. Now, you should have an important doubt. ‘If natural minerals are good for health, then why use a system which destroys them and brings them back?’ Again, it’s a very good question. Let me explain.
The problem with these systems is that they destroy the essential minerals present in water and then re-mineralize the water. Now, what if you had a system which purifies water without destroying these essential minerals? That would be simple, right? This is where you should understand the concept of active carbon block filtration.
Active carbon blocks are very effective in removing contaminants from water and they retain the essential minerals present in water. As a result, the water is both healthy and pure. This is why they are considered better than reverse osmosis and distillation based water filter units. This is also the reason why doctors around the world suggest multi chambered active carbon filtration units.
The point, as I’ve already made, is this - pure mineral water benefits your body like no other liquid. Now, can you imagine using a mineral revitalization system which wastes a lot of water and consumes a lot of time instead of active carbon block filter which is both easy to use and more effective? The choice, the way I see it, is very simple.

Zach Zimmerman asked:
Despite possible mineral water benefits, I don’t believe that mineral revitalization water purification systems are a worthwhile investment. They simply don’t make sense. Here’s what I mean.
Why would you take naturally occurring waters, strip them of their minerals and then “revitalize” them, by adding your own choice of minerals back in? There is no doubt that today a home purifier is a basic necessity, unless you live on a farm with a pristine spring. But, it is possible to purify without de-mineralizing?
Since ancient times, people have sought out mineral water benefits for healing a variety of conditions. The warm springs and naturally carbonated baths were tourist attractions for many years. I myself have visited a small town in West Virginia, taken a bath in the hot springs followed by a wonderful massage, and left feeling more relaxed than I’d been in years. Of course, most people today rely on prescription drugs and other sedatives, rather than truly relaxing in a hot bath. So the natural springs are not popular vacation spots any longer. Anyway, the advertising claims regarding mineral revitalization water purification systems is overstated, to say the least.
All natural sources have trace minerals, which are essential for good health. They are often referred to as electrolytes, because they are tiny ionic particles that you can’t see, but they do improve the taste of water. Sodium and potassium are the most important of these electrolytes. Most people get enough of these through diet, but when it comes to taste, waters that have traces of sodium and potassium are simply better.
That brings me to the bottled beverage companies. They also overstate mineral water benefits. I’ve read claims concerning the relief of many serious health conditions, just by regularly consuming these bottled beverages.
If I had to choose between buying bottled and buying mineral revitalization water purification systems, I’d choose the later. The plastic bottles leach chemicals into the liquids. Those chemicals are believed to increase our cancer risks. Both plastic and glass bottles are a major source of pollution. I care a great deal about the environment, as well as my long term health, but there are better options than expensive mineral revitalization water purification systems.
They are called selective filtration.
With the technology that is currently available, it is possible to remove contaminants without removing naturally occurring minerals. With a step called ion exchange, traces of lead and copper will be replaced with traces of sodium and potassium, but unlike mineral revitalization water purification systems, this step is inexpensive.
So, you can have mineral water benefits without paying thousands of dollars for a purifier or buying hundreds of plastic bottles. The best purifier on the market costs around a hundred dollars and can be installed in minutes. You can even enjoy mineral water benefits in your own bathroom with a showerhead filter that costs even less. It’s like bathing in hot springs in the privacy of your own home.

Bob Goodhand asked:
Is bottled mineral water healthy? The makers of natural mineral water h20 would have you think that it is. Maybe we should look at some facts about the bottled water industry, and how it’s affecting our lives.
Bottling is one of the biggest polluting industries in the United States. There are over 60,000,000 plastic bottles that are being produced, transported and disposed of every day, in this country alone. From an environmental standpoint it would be really difficult to proclaim bottled mineral water healthy.
There is also the issue of the true quality of natural mineral water h20 and other products like it. The majority of bottled water that is manufactured and sold here does not fall under the jurisdiction of the FDA’s set of bottled water standards. How is it possible that the bottlers are able to avoid federal regulation?
The fact is that the majority of bottled water companies will produce and sell their water only in the same state, thereby avoiding federal control. Only if the water crosses state lines doe it fall under the guidelines of the FDA. Knowing that the manufacturers are using a loophole to escape from government standards do you still consider bottled mineral water healthy?
Did you know that while city tap water is allowed to have no fecal coliform or E-coli bacteria present, bottled products such as mineral water h20 fall under no such prohibition? Even under FDA regulation there are certain allowable limits at which contaminants may be present.
There are also no regulations in place stating that bottlers must filter or disinfect the water used in their product. It is almost certain that the manufacturers probably do some kind of filtering to make their mineral water healthy, but the level of purity has to be questioned.
Most bottled water is nothing more than filtered tap water poured into a closed container. The makers of natural mineral water h20 claim that their water actually comes from a spring. One disturbing aspect of drawing surface water from a spring is that bottlers are not required to test their sources for Giardia or Cryptosporidium, two common bacteria that cause intestinal illnesses.
Is mineral water healthy? There are only limited guidelines set as to the level of quality that the bottlers have to adhere to, so you don’t know exactly how or if the water has been purified. If you have to look at a bottle and wonder about the quality of the product inside, then I would have to say no to the question.
If your water is packaged in plastic bottles like mineral water h20, then it cannot be healthy for you no matter what kind of purification process it’s been through. Phthalate is a cancer-causing chemical used in the process of rendering plastic more flexible. This toxic carcinogen can leach from the plastic into your water.
A better answer to bottled water would be a home water filtration system. If you purchased one of the best systems, then you would never have reason to question the quality and purity of your drinking water again. A home water filter can give you gallons of water for pennies per day, as opposed to the dollars you were spending on bottled.
It would be nearly impossible to ever consider bottled mineral water healthy with everything that you know now.
